Centre to offer discount on bulk cotton purchase.

The inability of the Cotton Corporation of India to dispose of 75lakh bales, procured by it in 2008-09 crop year, has prompted the Centre to offer discounts on bulk purchase of cotton. However, CCI offer price expected to be Rs 19,800-19,900 per candy, is not expected to attract the domestic textile sector that has kept of procuring owing to a steep price variation with the ongoing market price and the international rates.

Textile industry expects third stimulus package

Battling a slowdown that has shackled the growth of the industry, the textile industry seems to be betting high on the third stimulus package and the Exim policy announcements. The Young Entrepreneurs Group of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, met in the city in the backdrop of the disappointing interim budget, to discuss the way ahead for the industry on Monday. With over 50% of the production in the textile value chain being exported the global economic developments has had a serious impact on the industry.

Textiles sector miffed with lack of sops

A 2% tax subvention on pre-shipment and post shipment credit to exporters, as announced in the interim Budget 2009-10, will not help the textile sector, say exporters. They pointed out that the lack of any measures to uplift the labour intensive textile sector, ignored by the government in the stimulus packages as well, will demotivate the export fraternity. Exports of readymade garments, projected at Rs 25,000 crore for the current financial year, have already dipped by 10% in the past three months.

Tech textile ind needs platform to capture defence biz

The domestic technical textile industry needs to create a platform for stronger industry defence ex-changes and partnership to capture a major part in the country's outlay of about Rs 2,000 crore on clothing and fabric needs of its armed forces and security personnel. According to a study by industry association Ficci, India spends a large amount of money on purchasing uniforms for the 1.5 million- strong armed forces and an equal number of paramilitary and security forces.
But the $8-billion Indian technical textile industry is losing the business as most of the security-related orders are being carted away by foreign companies, the study said. A large number of the armed forces and security personnel are required to be equipped with protective and special clothing that are called technical textiles. This requirement is functional in nature and offer a large market for Indian technical textiles manufacturers," the study said.
Technical textiles are also used by defence and paramilitary forces for their parachutes, bullet proof jackets, geo-textiles for border roads, tents and mosquito nets.

It is not just branded apparel that is driving the growth of India's textile sector. As the Indian consumer drapes up her home with exquisite upholstery, introduces baby diapers and tea bags to the family and drives around in four-wheelers, it is pushing new category of speciality textiles in the sub-continent. Growing at a phenomenal 11-12% year on year, the consumption of technical textiles in India will swell from current Rs 37,565 crore to Rs 64,207 crore by 2012-13.

Taxes stifle textile growth in Punjab

A struggling industry demands roll-back of taxes to revive itself. The textile cluster in Punjab is passing through a rough patch. The industry is grappling simultaneously with high taxes and the high minimum support price of cotton. The revision of entry tax on the raw material to 4 per cent last year has also increased the difficulties for the industry. The tax is around 2 per cent in neighbouring states. The spindles in Punjab consume about 5 million bales of cotton a year. The production in the state is about 2.5 million bales a year, so Punjab imports cotton from other states.

Hike in cotton MSP puts Rs35K crore burden on govt Guj is expected to produce 110 lakh bales of cotton in 2008-09

Hike in minimum support prices (MSP) for cotton by 38% to 48% has imposed a burden of Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 3,500 crore on the central government, said Shankarsinh Vaghela, union minister for textiles.
He further said that recession would not force the government to retreat on the decision. Vaghela was speaking at a seminar organised by Cotton Corporation of India Ltd (CCI) in Rajkot on Sunday.
Cotton production in the country, which was 179 lakh bales in 2003-04, is expected to reach a record level of 322 lakh bales in 2008-09. Keeping pace with the increase in cotton production in the country, Gujarat is expected to post two-fold increase in 2008-09 compared to its production in 2003-04 which was 50 lakh bales.
Gujarat has emerged as the largest cotton producing state in the country having 34% of share in the total production of cotton.

Growth is at home for textile and apparels next two years could be bad for industry

Slump in demand coupled with higher input prices is taking its toll on textile companies of Gujarat. The demand for textiles and apparels in international market is not expected to grow in coming two years and so, the experts suggest that the industry should focus on domestic market. The domestic market is estimated to grow in double digits in the next four years. On the other hand, textile and apparel exports have come down due to fall in demand in international market. "Next two years will be bad for the textile industry and exports could fare badly. So, the textile industry in Gujarat will have to focus on domestic market. The domestic market, which is put at $30 billion, is likely to grow by a CAGR of around 10 per cent over the next four years. Last year, the market had grown by around 13 per cent," said advisor to Crisil, Sunil Parekh. "The economic slowdown has turned out to be beneficial for the textile industry in the state. Garment industry in the country would be the biggest lose	r while the textile industry can diversify into niche markets. It can diversify into technical textiles, engineering textiles, furnishing textiles, hosiery textiles or the like," Parekh said, adding that the impact of the slowdown on textile sector would be lesser than the garment industry.Gujarat accounts for 12 per cent of India's total textile exports, estimated at $2.3 billion. The total size of the industry in the country was around $49 billion in 2006-07, with exports of $19.3 billion and domestic market of around $30 billion. Gujarat contributes 30 per cent of total fabric production in the organised sector and 40 per cent of the art silk fabric production.
