Last two years have been worse for the domestic textile sector, because of the rupee appreciation, which resulted in the textile industry falling to meet its export targets during the last financial year. Subsequent recession in major export destinations like US and Europe also hit hard the Indian textile industry in the current financial year.

Current economic scenario is the result of reduction in the demand of products in the market. It can be associated with falling prices known as deflation due to lack of demand. It could be the result of inflation or a combination of increasing prices and stagnant economic growth.

Whatever are the global or domestic situation, Indian industry especially textile sector is to go ahead fighting against all ups and downs. For that what industry experts and policy makers are to do is design appropriate strategy and implement it efficiently. Understanding the universal truth, without generating sufficient income at the hands of the people and creating demand for products, the desired economic growth may not be achieved.

To achieve this, industry is to focus on employment generating activities lowering the input costs, adopting innovative technology oriented production techniques, with internationally as well as domestically well accepted designs and quality products.

This issue contains articles on computer aided textile designs and computer aided manufacturing, e-business in textiles etc. We hope that these articles would help the industry in understanding various applications of CAD & CAM as well as the e-business would help to understand utilisation of information and communication technologies in support of all the activities in business. With the help of E-commerce we can exchange the products and services between businesses, groups and individuals. E-business methods enable companies to link their internal and external data processing systems more efficiently and flexibly to work more closely with suppliers and partners and to better satisfy the needs and expectation of their customers. E-business involves business processes spanning the entire value chain electronic purchasing and supply chain management processing orders electronically handling customer services and cooperating with business partners.

Let’s hope that coming budget, with novel schemes, would help the industry to come out of the current situation !
