  • Gujarat has achieved a shining success in Cotton

Shri Chudasmaji gives an extremely progressive scenario of the status of "Cotton" in Gujarat. The last three years have seen an increase of 22 metric tonnes in production of cotton and an increase of Rs 4000 crores in income from cotton. The article outlines the various steps taken by the Gujarat government to facilitate further progress. These are availability of sufficient water in check-dams, awareness of scientific cultivation, training of farmers, emphasis on quality and serving the economic interest of the farmers. Thus chudasamaji concludes by saying that "In the scenario where the world trend in cotton is in favor of qualitative cottons, obviously, Gujarat will be benefited. The circumstances and indication of last two years imply that the efforts of the government of Gujarat, for the upliftment of cotton growing farmers of Gujarat have begun to bear its fruits".

Shri Sanatbhai Mehta gives a very critical and a comprehensive view of the status of "cotton" in India. He compares the present scenario and the future potential vis-à-vis global development. He draws a comparison between several states and shows how Gujarat has made progress. The progress is the result of the evolution of Swadeshi Bt, increase in cotton acreage and production, efficient handling of ginning and pressing of cotton. The article further makes constructive suggestions for further improvement. Some of these are improvement of quality parameters of cotton to suit the high speeds of latest machines, eradication of contamination, improvement of bale packing standards, promotion of Indian brand and so forth. At length he concluded by saying that"Time has come when India has proved that its cotton can become competitive if due care is taken and neglect of agriculture and farmers exhibited in post reform period is put to an end".

 

 

Cotton Spinning in India in the Post Quota Abolition Regime : Problems and Prospects

This article emphasizes that reduction in production of cotton and an increase in its demand necessitates concentration on cotton growing activities. India is 3rd largest cotton producing country blessed with conducive climatic conditions, large skilled and low cost labour force and support of research institutions. However India still lags in productivity in comparison to other countries because of poor irrigation facilities, poor Micronaire value, multiplicity of variety, contamination and ago old spinning technology. However a positive trend is seen in the field due to improvement of spinning process and betterment in machinery. The challenges that we face are labor costs, energy costs and quality. The article outlines how these challenges may be combated. Shri Batwalji concludes by saying that nanotechnology, biotechnology and plasma technology have made it possible to develop textile products with special properties like antibacterial, antifungal, fire retardant and anti-crease prop erties.

 

 

Contract Farming in Cotton : Shape of things to come

This article familiarizes the reader with a latest development i.e. "contract farming" in the field of cotton and its implications for India. In light of the 'Textile Vision-2010' lot of changes will have to be made to bring about improvement. Several new initiatives have been made like introduction of B.T Cotton hybrids, launching of Technology Mission on cotton (TMC), modernisation of factories and so on. Contract farming is another concept which brings about a win-win situation for farmer and industry both. This is because mills provided with steady supply and farmers with capital and buy-back guarantee. Shri Jayantibhai expresses a major concern in conclusion by saying that "The only worry is how respective authorities will make it sure that the systems of Contract farming remain transparent and farmers get real reward for their efforts and there is no explanation by powerful corporate giants".

Chiripal Group making a beginning with manufacturing of cotton gray fabrics and soon mood into processing (1974). The following year saw them adding a hand-screen printing division. However the major happening awaited them in 1976 when they took over a small unit of about 2000sq yds on rent of just Rs 4000 ! This was beginning of a major enterprise today known as Vishal Fabrics, the foundation block of Chiripal group of Industries.

Today Chiripal Group is promoting a 94 acre exclusive park under SITP in the name and style of VRAJ INTEGRATED TEXTILE PARK LTD. With a total outlay of over Rs. 575 crores the project has already received approvals from the State and Central Governments. Speaking to TEXTILE REVIEW in an exclusive interview FACE2FACE Vedprakash Chiripal observes "Denim is going to stay for a long long time and Nandam Exim is going to be a long term player". Vedprakash visualizes that "Group turnover by 2011 should be in the neighborhood of Rs 5000 crores". For Chiripal-"Success is being peaceful in the knowledge of what you have achieved". He began to enjoy and understand it in bits and parcels with each passing day!"

The textile industry occupies a unique place in our country. One of the earliest to come into existence in India, it accounts for 8% of GDP, 28% of industrial production, 9% excise collection, 30-35% exports and 19% employment in the industrial sector employing 38 million people and making the second largest employment providing sector after agriculture. Yarn Expo 2006

Full account of the inaugural session of Yarn Expo 2006 organized by The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Surat on 18th November 2006. Welcoming the guests, the President of the Chamber, Shri Pravin Nanavati, made a brief mention about the development of textile industry at Surat and the background of Yarn Expo 2006. A brief outline of the event was provided by the Event Chairman and past President of the SGCCI, Shri Mahendra Kajiwala. The Chief Guest, Shri Praful Shah observed that in adopting any kind of yarn whether bicomponent or mixed Surat has never got bogged down. The Guest of Honour, Editor-TEXTILE REVIEW and Chairman- Saket Projects Limited, Shri Jay Narayan Vyas made a pertinent observation saying that till yesterday textile was labeled as a sunset industry with Information Technology becoming the glamour sector. Gokak Mills today is one of the most recognized manufacturer, supplier and exporters of yarns and canvas. Today Forbes Gokak Limited has emerged as a leading supplier in the international market for yarn and knitted garments exporting more than 50 per cent of its production to over 30 countries in USA, EU and Asia. They have also established a knitwear factory in Karnataka in association with TATA Group. The recommendation from the analysts reads - "As far as stock movement is concerned FGL giving breakout signal at Rs. 490 is treading at Rs. 555 with heavy volumes. However we are still feeling uncomfortable with its movement until it gives closing above Rs. 560. For short-term trader we advised book profit on higher level and buy around Rs. 500 level with stop loss at Rs. 485 for 6 months portfolio". The analysts claim not to have any holdings in ei ther of these stocks
