- Embroidery : An Art of Expression !

This article updates the TEXTILE REVIEW readers with the Embroidery's role. Embroidery is an art of decorating a ground fabric with stitches to enrich it and add to its beauty. It can be worked on any pliable material from leather to gauge, in threads ranging from wool to the finest gold and it can be embellished with jewels, pearls and enamels. Laksmi Challa - Guest Faculty Lecturer observes that "The origin of the embroidery, as of all needlework, do obscure owe to perishable nature of fabric. It is also difficult to give an exact history of it". "Embroidery is one of the oldest and most popular forms of surface ornamentation of fabrics and garments, and India is among the top suppliers of embroidered fabrics and garments worldwide. The sector is now getting more organized, with large players entering it" she added.

In an exclusive interview with the TEXTILE REVIEW, Shri Mahendra Kajiwala, Former President, Textile Club and SGCCI, Surat says that "The embroidery industry entered Surat in 2003-04". Making observations on the developments of this industry at other centres, Kajiwala says that the embroidery industry has simultaneously taken routes at Bombay, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata etc. While Surat can boast of the highest population of embroidery machines, Delhi and Kolkata would occupy second and third positions, respectively.
Concluding the discussions, Kajiwala says that "the traditional strength of Surat is in sari and dress materials. Last two years have seen the development of curtain fabric and shirtings as a new segment. Surat has started receiving the grey for both these sectors in large volumes from Bhivandi which is being processed at Surat and then sold in the national network". Kajiwala therefore feels that the dynamic vision and adapting to the changing market with an innovative eye could only make the embroidery sector flourish further. He feels that the Surat entrepreneur imbibes these qualities and therefore there is no need to worry.

This article is penned by Shri M.K. Panthaki. He gives an overview of Garment Industry in India. Shri Panthaki observes that "The garment industry is gearing itself up for the next five years. By 2010/11, the industry has a vision to scale up exports to $. 23 billion with a corresponding increase in production to meet the demands of the domestic market". "This would mean virtually a four-fold increase in production and heavy investment in additional manufacturing capacity as well as human resources. Direct labour is expected to increase from the current 36.5 lacs to 121.9 lacs by 2010/11, if this vision is fulfilled".
Finally he concludes by saying that "Taking into account the demand push on the economy and the prospects of a resurgent rural economy, the industry does not wish to be caught napping".
Export Performance of Indian Textile Industry : A Sector Study

This article jointly authored by Dr. P. Challasamy & Mr. K. Umanath. The article looks into the export performance of Indian Textile Industry. While concluding this article, the authors say that "the textile industry, which is the industry earning the highest income of our country after agriculture. The textile industry's export performance is going well as per the study based on the data shown in the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS). That is the export of textile products is budding year by year". "Numerically say, in the year 2002-03 export of textile products was Rs.60071.70 crs and its climb up to Rs 62017.2 crs in the year 2003-04, and it reached Rs 63024.18 crs in the year 2004-05" they added .

Apart from embroideries clothing PEL also caters Torchon (Bobbin) laces and Raschel laces to domestic market as well as global market like North America, Latin America, Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Pioneer Embroidery manufacturing plants setup at Sarigam, Gujarat and Naroli, Union territory of Dadra - Nagra Haveli are well equipped with in-house facilities of shearing, mending, scallop cutting and yarn preparation for embroidery. It also acquires Hakoba brand and embroidery manufacturing facilities from M/s. Fancy Corporation Ltd. from Mumbai. The advice from the analysts reads -financial performance is showing moderate growth during FY 06-07 where both quarterly and yearly performance shows strength of the company. Revenue increased by 16.24% at Rs. 151.30 Cr. and profit increased by 35.96% at 15.25 Cr. During Q3 and Q4 FY 06-07 market value of PEL has made high of Rs.313.40 which is appx. 300% jump from low of Rs. 81 for same period. Currently stock is trading at Rs. 167.05 we maintain profit booking at every hike.
