How to Estimate the Individual Contribution of Raw Material, Machinery Condition and Process Variables on Yarn Quality - An Analytical Approach
Dr. K. P. Chellamani & M. K. Vittopa The South India Textile Research Association, Coimbatore
One of the constant concerns of a spinner is to ensure that the quality of yarn spun meets the quality level planned while deciding the raw material to be used and process parameters to be maintained during the manufacturing process. Many times, when the yarn quality deviates from the planned level, technicians are confronted with locating the correct cause for the deviation i.e. whether the quality deviation is due to - raw material used or due to
- process parameters maintained or due to
- condition of the production machinery etc.
An attempt is made in this paper towards familiarizing the spinning technicians in locating the correct cause for yarn quality deviation. To be specific, yarn unevenness (U%) and the relevant causes for the same are explained in this article.
Recent Innovation in Cotton Dyeing With Natural Colours - A Review
Alka Ali, Dr. Anita Nishkam & Dharmendra Pandey , U.P.T.T.I. Kanpur
Typical process of procurement & dyeing methodology of natural dyes were termed as primitive technology of coloration .In fact introduction of synthetics dyes in 1856, the use of synthetic dyes have dominated the natural dyeing, almost it was restricted to some craft dyes for production of novel effect. Synthetic dyes have created a serious threat to health hazards and ecology. In order to counteract this concern the significance of natural dye is the need of the hour. More scientific approach regarding fastness properties, method of extraction and dyeing technologies is needed for its commercial acceptability .In this paper some of the recent innovation in the field of cotton dyeing with natural colors are highlighted which will be significant for processing technologists.

Neural network is a computational structure. A neural network is a massively parallel distributed processor made up of simple processing units, which has a neural propensity for storing experiential knowledge and making it available for use. It has capability to organize its structural constituents, known as "Neurons". It can perform certain computations (e.g. fabric pattern, fabric defects, fabric wrinkle, etc.) many times faster than the fastest computer. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is a field of computer science that seeks to understand and implement computer based technology. The Neural Network is understood on the basis of their properties, construction, classification - based on application, advantages of neural computing.
Fabric engineering needs a thorough understanding of the functional properties and their construction parameters. When the relationship between a set of interrelated properties goes beyond the complete comprehension of the human brain, neural networks (NNs) could be used to find the unknown function. Neural network describes the method, for the prediction of both construction and performance parameters of fabrics. Accordingly, constructional parameters are used as input for predicting the performance parameter in forward engineering, and the parameters are reversed for the reverse engineering prediction. Comparison between actual results and predicted results is made. An expert system with an embedded artificial neural network (ANN) is also used, with its functionality toward engineered fabric manufacturing.

Technical Textiles in Agriculture & Horticulture
M. Uttam, Arun Kumar Singh Gangwar & Dr. Prashant
G. C. T. I. Souterganj, Kanpur
This article is written by the trio Shri M. Uttam, Shri Arun Kumar Singh Gangwar & Dr. Prashant. This article explains about the usage of Technical Textiles in Agriculture and Horticulture. The potential of the usage of agrotextiles all over the world and also in India is really huge. Trio says that "Indian market potential for such end use is relatively huge as the country is blessed with good weather which can ensure crop growth through nearly 8 months in a year in most of the regions". "Additionally, over the past 15 years, there has been an increasing awareness of UV rays and their damaging effects on people and property. Australia and South Africa have been at the forefront of the development of these applications, hence the growth of the industry in the Southern Hemisphere" they added.

Under the regular column, experts Dilip and Rushik Bhatt discus about the Page Industries Ltd. Page is renowned with "Jockey" brand across the world. Page has introduced Jockey products for women under the style of "Jockey for Her" and different range of men's undergarment. The company also launched sub brand "Jockey Zone" and "Jockey brassieres" in India. Page has strong presence across the country by having network of more than 10,000 retail outlets. It has production capacity of more than 2 million pieces per month. Though we have limited figure from books of account for financial year 07-08, we can have a feel good factor about the company.
The advice from the analysts reads - If company successfully manages to provide PAT figure for last quarter FY 07-08, it will give appx. 40% growth YoY. Stock holding pattern of last three successive quarters reflects the sentiment of share holders where retail public and institutions were took their position in opposite direction. Retail investors were getting out and domestic institutional investors were getting in. "The chart pattern shows less liquid nature of stock where it is trading with lower volume. Currently stock trading at Rs. 450, we recommend "HOLD" at current level with stop loss of Rs. 417" they added.
