Expressing their disappointment over the government's second stimulus package announced on January 2, apparel exporters have sought further measures to boost the sector. "Garment exports have declined by 11.29% in November to $ 6.21 billion as compared to $ 7 billion in November 2007 but the government has done nothing to help the $ 10 billion apparel export sector," said, Rakesh Vaid, chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC).
Between April and November this year, apparel exports fell by 0.2%. The Council estimates garment exports to fall 24% short of the $11.62 billion target for 2008-09, Vaid said, adding that it may amount to $8.78 billion as against $ 9.69 billion a year ago.
